Concrete Masonry Units (CMUs) play a crucial role in construction, and understanding their production and different types can provide valuable insights into building practices.

Here’s a brief overview of what you might encounter during your visit:

  1. Raw Materials and Mixing: The process begins with the preparation of dry aggregates, such as sand, gravel, and cement. You’ll likely see how these materials are mixed to achieve the right consistency for the CMUs.
  2. Molding and Shaping: The mixture is then poured into molds to form the blocks. Depending on the type of CMU, the molds can vary in size and shape. You’ll observe how the molds are filled, vibrated to remove air bubbles, and then cured.
  3. Curing Process: After molding, the CMUs need to be cured to achieve their strength. This process involves keeping the blocks in a controlled environment with moisture and temperature regulated. You’ll see how this step ensures the blocks reach their desired durability.
  4. Types of CMUs:
    • Standard CMUs: These are the basic building blocks used in most construction projects. They come in various sizes and configurations.
    • Grout Block: These blocks are designed to be filled with grout for added strength, often used in structural applications.
    • 32” CMUs: Larger blocks that might be used for specific applications requiring more substantial and robust construction.
  5. Quality Control: The tour will probably include a look at the quality control measures in place to ensure that each block meets industry standards for strength and durability.
  6. Applications and Uses: You’ll likely learn about the different applications for each type of block and how they contribute to various types of construction projects, from residential buildings to commercial structures.

Important Note: Closed toed shoes and hard hats are required in the manufacturing facility. Lampus can provide a number of hard hats if you need one, but if you can, please plan to bring your own.

We hope to see you there! If you have any questions about the event, please reach out to Evan Sargo at evan@bxpa.org.
